What Do You Need For This PADI Nitrox Course To Start?
You need a Open Water Diver Certification. (You must be 15 years of age or older).

What You Will Do During This PADI Nitrox Course?
You will learn diving procedures and preparation involving Enriched Air Nitrox diving.

How Quick Can You Start Diving With Enriched Air / Nitrox?
Just a little classroom work and a couple dives and you’ll be on your way.

Where can you go after succesfully completing this PADI Nitrox Course with BIDP?
You can apply this Specialty course towards your Master Scuba Diver certification.You also need the PADI Nitrox / Enriched Diver certification if you intend to move into Technical Diving.

WHAT IS NITROX (Enriched Air / EANx)

Nitrox is any combination of nitrogen and Oxygen. Regular breathing gas is comprised of approximately 21% Oxygen and 79% Nitrogen. Nitrox mixtures with percentages of oxygen greater than 21% are called Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx). The commonly used EANx mixtures are EAN 32 (32% Oxygen and 68% Nitrogen) and EAN 36 (36% Oxygen and 64% Nitrogen). A prudent nitrox diver would also take advantage of a programmable nitrox computer to provide them with the added benefit of multi-level nitrox diving.

Nitrox was first used in 1912 and has been used extensively since the 1960's by the military and commercial operations and since 1985 in recreational diving. It is also used in the medical field as a therapy gas for hyperbaric wound care, breathing O2 at high PO2 levels under pressure has tremendous tissue healing benefits. 
Advanced divers have been taking advantage of Nitrox for cave diving, wreck diving and many other diving applications. Recreational diving agencies, like NAUI and PADI fully recognize and sanction Nitrox as a safe alternate breathing gas.

WHY USE EANx NITROX

EANx Nitrox Diving Has Many Advantages Over Traditional Diving. Some Of The Benefits Over Air-Diving Are:

• EANx, when used with standard dive tables or computers, provides a added safety factor when diving to the planned depth.
• An extension of "no-decompression" time limits when using EANx Nitrox dive tables.
• A reduction of decompression time if the no-decompression limits are exceeded.
• A reduction in residual nitrogen in the body following a dive.
• A reduction in the narcotic effect of nitrogen
• Reduced fatigue after the dive (declared by many EANx Nitrox divers)

HOW EANx NITROX WORKS:

EANx Nitrox replaces some of the nitrogen you breathe underwater with O2, so that during the dive you absorb less Nitrogen that you would, when breathing normal. Your body metabolizes and otherwise absorbs the extra O2 used so that, within the limits of recreational enriched air diving, it does not contribute to bubble formation after a dive. This means you have longer no decompression limits for each depth you descend, using air. How much longer depends upon the blend of EANx Nitrox.

Military research shows divers have been using Nitrox for over 50 years, so it has been well researched.

Caution!  We must stress O2 used improperly has its dangers due to O2 toxicity. EANx has a more immediate risk than air but used safely both Air and EANx Nitrox have impressive safety records.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS (Which Must Not Be Ignored):

5 safety considerations: Potential for O2 toxicity - stay within safe O2 limits & depths. Specialist equipment is required. Availability of enriched air. Proper gas blending & handling - safe enriched air diving requires certified knowledge and steps to ensure you have the correct blends. More complex dive planning - never rush your planning and double check your planning and discipline yourself to stay well within your limits - always! All of these concerns mean that only reputable qualified enriched air blenders should fill enriched air cylinders and work with Nitrox.
