Mola Mola Encounter
While out on one of my wife's first open water experiences, we were happily cruising along in the unusually cool waters of Tulamben accompanied by several other divers, 2 dive masters, one of which had qualities similar to that of a darting clown fish!
Suddenly the surrounding waters became very gray and cloudy and I, having had the experience before, glanced around to check on my student, who was hanging in the ocean and had grasped my arm so tightly and her eyes were as big as golf balls and... there were no bubbles coming from her mouthpiece. I tried to hide my amusement.
After the dive we all told the story and laughed until we fell down, it was of course a 3 by 3 meter MOLA MOLA fish, mambo or sunfish, as they are known here. It of course would have been more terrified than my wife and it plunged, deep down and away from us, much to every one else's disappointment. |

Bali sharks vs. Maldivian's
While filming in the Maldives Avandy was taking a well earned break from the clutches of terrified, Italian mixed females! He came across a shark in the distance. Of course the adrenaline starts pumping, the pure excitement of seeing such an evil looking master of the ocean! All systems go, of course, in Avandy's words, "in the back of my mind I was thinking shark experience! - Same as Bali - docile reef tips, this one will be no problem", even though it was quite a size larger! However Avandy was in love with this creature and his split second of panic was overpowered by the shark's presence. We guess it was not feeling the same way about him! It came from nowhere straight at him,"so bloody quick", he said. He also said other words all of which are improper to publish on the net! Avandy, always so meticulous in the handling of his photographical equipment, bashed the angry shark for his life. It had been the first time he had used his video equipment as a club. The scars remain to be seen. |
Lobster - catch me if you dare! After just receiving my open water certificate, as a birthday treat, a diving trip to Padang Bai had been arranged. Night diving was the plan. But I had been told if I did not manage to catch my dinner I would go without. I had seen my instructor catch one before, with his bare hands it looked "dead" easy and I wanted to impress him and so I was determined. We only took what we ate so I only had to catch one! I saw it! It had it's back to me against the wall; I hovered behind it with my gloved hand in position to grab it from above. I was just about to grab it and it suddenly spun around and jumped out at me. It stood it's ground as if to say "go on then, if you dare", loads of bubbles were expelled from my mouthpiece this time and an under water squeal was heard by all who by this time were rolling around in their wetsuits, under the water in hysterics! There used to be many lobsters in this secret location however they have since moved to breed. We did see Eric, as we named him, one more time before he left. Way ahead in our beam of light we saw an absolutely, fearless creature powering down, (like robo-cop) the sand towards us. We smiled and watched as suddenly he flipped and was off like lightening. |

Rare sightings
There have been sightings of whale shark, approximately 30 feet in length, this is very rare but possible if you are extremely lucky. |
